In an epic career that has spanned over 50 years, Judy has been twice nominated for a Bafta: for her performances as Maria Thins in Girl With A Pearl Earring and Mildred Layton in The Jewel In The Crown.


Sister Mary Cynthia (Bryony Hannah)

Sister Mary returned to Nonnatus House in series four after completing her religious training. She remains Trixie's closest friend, and is active in supporting her rehabilitation. She suffered a vicious attack in series five and is still recovering.

Bryony made her name in theatre and gained an Olivier award nomination for her performance in The Children's Hour. She was starring in the BBC Three sitcom Dead Boss at the same time as when Call The Midwife first broke out.


Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George)

Trixie turned to drink after breaking off her engagement to Tom in series four when he was relocated to Newcastle. Series five saw him begin a relationship with Barbara, and much to her angst Trixie gave the pair her blessing.

Helen has starred in Call the Midwife from the beginning, but also came sixth in the 2015 series of Strictly Come Dancing.


Nurse Patsy Mount (Emerald Fennell)

Trixie's roommate, the bright and brilliant Patsy, has long been in a secret relationship with fellow nurse Delia. She's faced with a dilemma in series six when a letter from Hong Kong brings news of her father.

Emerald Fennell has popped up in a number of TV productions including Channel 4 comedy Chickens (with Simon Bird, Joe Thomas and Jonny Sweet), and also had roles in films such as Anna Karenina and Albert Nobbs.


Dr Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann)

Dr Turner is Poplar's physician, who helps at the convent and is married to Shelagh.

Stephen has a close relationship with his character in Call the Midwife, having studied for a Masters degree in Science Communication. Last year he published an essay in the journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. He'll be known to soap opera viewers as Sean Reynolds from Emmerdale, and is married to Call the Midwife screenwriter Heidi Thomas.
