Review

Jane Rackham

This slick, if formulaic, US legal drama based on John Grisham’s book of the same name ticks all the boxes for an easy-going binge. There’s an attractive cast, an idealistic rookie lawyer with a clear moral stance on injustice, a corrupt corporation for him to tackle in a David- and-Goliath courtroom battle and a host of colourful minor characters (including Lana Parrilla and PJ Byrne as South Carolina ambulance chasers) to lighten the mood.

Milo Callaghan takes centre stage as the inexperienced Rudy Baylor (played by Matt Damon in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1997 film adaptation), while Mad Men’s John Slattery is unscrupulous legal boss Leo F Drummond (“I am the punishment of God,” he pompously announces at a staff meeting). The central case concerns medical malpractice, but with a second series now commissioned, Rudy’s caseload looks set to broaden.
