Review

Gabriel Tate

Based on a French graphic novel, The Sentinels tells the story of Gabriel Ferraud (Louis Peres), horrifically injured on the Western Front in 1915 but given a new lease of life – and superpowers – by a serum developed in a clandestine lab secreted in the Parisian slums.

His wife Irène (Olivia Ross) is sceptical of the official line that Gabriel has fallen in battle, and goes in search of the truth – one that involves mediums, German agents, burlesque dancers and gangsters with an unhealthy interest in the occult.

This French-language drama shares with Peaky Blinders the grimy violence, steampunk aesthetic and anachronistic soundtrack, as well as a nagging sense of style over substance. But it also has a potent sense of time and place and absolute faith in its world- building. As a metaphor for the dehumanising effects of war, it’s blunt but effective; as a show, it’s a wild ride for those who jump on board.
