In the late 1980s in the New York borough of Yonkers, a fight broke out over the desegregation of public housing and the siting of low-income housing in more affluent neighbourhoods. Not the stuff of primetime drama, you might think, but this has an impeccable pedigree — it’s written by The Wire creator David Simon, directed by Oscar-winner Paul Haggis and it has a strong cast. Nick Wasicsko (Oscar Isaac) is a young Democrat standing for mayor, and we see him doing everything an ambitious politico has to do (including wooing the incumbent’s secretary).
The period detail is great and the soundtrack is wall-to-wall Springsteen. Utterly compelling.
