In 2019, Leaving Neverland featured allegations from Wade Robson and James Safechuck that they were sexually abused by singer Michael Jackson. In the wake of the two-part documentary, and the headlines it generated around the world, many radio stations removed Jackson’s music from playlists. Temporarily, at least.

Looking back, the Bafta-winning film didn’t severely dent the King of Pop’s crown. In the six years since, a jukebox musical has appeared on Broadway and in the West End, and a film biopic (with Jackson’s nephew in the lead role) is due to be released soon.

This update sees Robson and Safechuck reflect on the aftermath of the original documentary, from the media attention and scrutiny aimed at them, to the lawsuits they have embarked on in the intervening years against the singer’s estate.

Though this is a more subdued follow-up to the bombshell original, more disturbing allegations are made about the singer, while archive footage of Jackson — where a child sits on his lap during an awards ceremony, or when he holds hands with another during an interview — still proves incredibly jarring.
