This genre-bending sci-fi has the hallmarks of a cheap-n-cheerful Predator rip-off, but is very much a film of two mismatched halves. It follows hiking couple Harry and Ruth (Jake Lacy and Maika Monroe), who set out backpacking through the Pacific Northwest before discovering they're far from alone in the wilderness. Sadly, the first half of the film focuses on the couple's dreary relationship woes, with little of note happening. When directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen do finally kick things into gear, they throw a complete curveball as the film switches from humdrum character drama to goofy schlock horror. Lovers of gonzo gore will savour the silly yet surprisingly well-directed splatter, which shamelessly escalates into utter farce. However, those who make it through the interminable first 45 minutes are unlikely to care who kills whom in the climactic face-off.
