Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

After re-creating the heroics of Sinbad, Gulliver and Captain Nemo in his previous fantasy epics, special-effects maestro Ray Harryhausen then turned his attention to the heroes, gods and monsters of Greek mythology, and produced some of his finest stop-motion magic. Stolid Todd Armstrong stars as the intrepid leader of Greece's greatest heroes whose quest for the legendary Golden Fleece offers up terrific action and a bonanza of monster mayhem - the Avengers of their day must defeat ghoulish harpies, a giant man of bronze and a sword-wielding skeleton army to make off with their booty. Any sword-and-sandal cheesiness is mercifully kept at bay thanks to a menacing but marvellous score from the great Bernard Herrmann, while a cast of British cinema's best (including Nigel Green as a boisterous Hercules and Niall MacGinnis and Honor Blackman as king and queen of the gods) adds gravitas and ensures there's wit and humanity among the derring-do. The result is a gloriously entertaining adventure for adults and children alike.
