Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

You know you're in for a heady brew of gratuitous mayhem right from the start of writer/director Sam Levinson's pointed 21st-century twist on the Salem witch trials. Male toxicity, homophobia, transphobia, guns, racism, torture and gore are all forecast, and readily delivered when a quartet of high-school girls are plunged into a murderous maelstrom of fear, prejudice and mob rule in the notorious Massachusetts town. Like their peers, Lily (Odessa Young), Em (Abra), Sarah (Suki Waterhouse) and Bex (Hari Nef) live in their own social-media bubble until a mysterious hacker scandalises the local mayor and the school principal by exposing data on the men's phones. But that's as nothing when the subversive figure hacks half the town's online accounts and the revelations unleash a Purge-like response with Lily at the top of the manic mob's hit list. Levinson (son of Rain Man director Barry) takes timely aim at our online obsession and the inherent threat to our privacy while the impact of the Me Too and Time's Up movements bubbles away in the background. His sophomore effort produces plenty of stylish visual moments - split-screen suspense à la Brian de Palma; nods to giallo maestro Dario Argento in a terrific home-invasion scene; the foursome as red-coated revengers - but they also overwhelm a narrative that really has something to say. However, there's no denying it's a bold, brash and thought-provoking ride.
