Summary

Horror comedy starring Bruce Campbell as Ash, whose romantic break in a remote cabin goes terrifyingly wrong when he accidentally unleashes an evil force that possesses his girlfriend.

Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Calum Baker

More a redo than a sequel, Sam Raimi's follow-up to his 1981 cult classic is another wild exercise in creative gore. Returning hero Ash (Bruce Campbell), who has either forgotten or dismissed his previous experiences with the Book of the Dead, brings his girlfriend (Denise Bixler) to another remote cabin in the woods for a romantic weekend. Unfortunately, the cabin's previous resident has left behind some satanic artefacts and it's not long before all hell breaks loose. A bigger budget allows Raimi to indulge himself with an array of camera tricks and stop-motion animation, as well as some truly grotesque prosthetics. But, for the most part, this is laugh-out-loud funny, and director and star go for broke creating cartoonish physical comedy heavily indebted to the Three Stooges. Campbell puts in a fantastically committed lead performance and sells every deranged set piece - the sequence where Ash battles his own hand is a highlight. If the first Evil Dead was a horror game-changer, this is Raimi's true triumph: a gleeful, scrappy expression of sheer invention.
