Lon Chaney, the master of disguise, created a grotesque white cataract in his eye with the skin of an eggshell to play the villainous Chinese owner of a Singapore dive. The evil character who has sent his daughter Lois Moran to a convent in Mandalay, kidnaps her sweetheart Owen Moore - he's a former partner-in-crime and Chaney wants the best for his little girl. As eerily atmospheric as the other collaborations between Chaney (another riveting performance) and director Tod Browning, who shared the star's taste for the macabre, it is by today's standards a rather overripe melodrama and strictly non-PC.
