Summary

Supernatural horror starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George. The Lutz family moves into a new house where a mass murder took place the year before. When they begin to be troubled by ghostly visions, it seems that the past may be about to repeat itself.

Alan Jones

Although no vast improvement on the popular 1979 original, this slick makeover from director Andrew Douglas does at least return to Jay Anson's bestseller for additional material and emphasises the psychological aspects of the notorious - and now clichéd - haunted-house tale. Here, the harrowing month spent by the Lutz family in their new Long Island home focuses on the mental breakdown suffered by patriarch George (an adequate Ryan Reynolds), who apparently becomes the satanic pawn of an ancient evil. Swarming flies, drafty grating, ghoulish jolts and a panicky priest (Philip Baker Hall) are all still present and correct, but this 2005 retread is really all about George's excursion into Shining territory. Even an increase in the number of action sequences can't cover up the fact that it remains an aggravatingly ordinary ghost-house affair.
