A host of soap-opera contrivances are hurled against the wall in writer/director Sacha Polak's fourth feature and, remarkably, many of them stick. Dagenham nurse Franky (Vicky Knight) meets and falls in love with suicide survivor Florence (Esmé Creed-Miles), whose family in Southend provides a haven away from the travails of Franky's addict mother (TerriAnn Cousins). Add in the physical and emotional scars that Franky still bears from a childhood fire that she blames on her father's new partner and it's a wonder the whole story, which also involves an Islamic-conversion subplot, doesn't collapse into a heap. Though sometimes melodramatic, this semi-improvised film is often devastatingly credible and compelling, particularly as Franky forges a bond with Florence's dying nana (a quietly compassionate Angela Bruce). Knight's courage in drawing on her own experiences brings power to her performance, while Polak shows great boldness in taking on so much challenging subject matter.
