A Taiwanese family boils over in this engrossing study of working-class life in Taipei. Shu-Fen (Janel Tsai) is a beleaguered mother who sets up a noodle stall in the night market, where she is occasionally helped by her two daughters - the grumpy I-Ann (Shi-Yuan Ma) and the younger I-Jing (Nina Ye). Theirs is a difficult existence, as Shu-Fen struggles under financial pressures, and it doesn't help that the impressionable I-Jing believes that her left-handedness is a curse. Directed by Shih-Ching Tsou, who co-wrote the script with Sean Baker (the American director of Anora), the film feels authentically Taiwanese, and the film-makers' interest in characters on the fringes shines through. Culminating in a fantastic scene at a restaurant that is both dramatic and funny, the film is also a visual treat (it was shot on an iPhone, like Baker's excellent 2015 film Tangerine). The result is a sheer delight.
