James Mottram

Richard Avedon, the pioneering 20th-century American photographer, goes in front of the lens in this well-crafted if slightly gushing documentary. Shooting everyone from Marilyn Monroe to James Baldwin, his portfolio changed the way magazines covered celebrities. But from documenting the Vietnam War to working in fashion to becoming The New Yorker's staff photographer in 1992 - a first for the distinguished publication - there was so much more to a man who helped turn commercial photography into an art form. Following documentaries he's made about Jim Henson, the Beatles and Pavarotti, director Ron Howard elegantly glides through Avedon's career, with the help of some classy interviewees (Isabella Rossellini, Twiggy, Calvin Klein). Made in association with the Richard Avedon Foundation over two decades after the subject died in 2004 aged 81, the film veers too closely to hagiography at times, with no one having a critical word to say. But Howard admirably captures the essence of an iconoclast who changed the way we look at images.
