Ben Kingsley heads the cast as Salvador Dalí, but this is less a biography of the celebrated surrealist painter and more a snapshot of the whirlwind of hangers-on and high-flying opportunists that shadowed his every move. Set in early 1970s New York, it's filtered through the eyes of young art gallery assistant James (Christopher Briney), a relative newcomer to bohemian society. James forms a bond with his new employer, witnessing firsthand the growing strain between the artist and his outlandish wife and muse Gala (Barbara Sukowa). Director Mary Harron (American Psycho) paints an evocative portrait of the cult of celebrity that's full of pinpoint period detail, while her early career as a music journalist pays dividends on some savvy soundtrack choices (less obvious album cuts by Roxy Music, Cockney Rebel, etc). Kingsley is a convincing Dalí, although for large stretches of the film he's not called upon to do much more than stand around looking enigmatic, while Briney's fresh-faced innocent makes for an effective counterpoint to the chaos around him.
