Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This is the film that should have made Rupert Everett a bigger star than he is. His electrifying performance, as a homosexual public schoolboy barred from an exclusive prefects' society, is at once endearing and arrogant. Directed by Marek Kanievska, from Julian Mitchell's adaptation of his own play about the background to the Burgess/MacLean spy scandal, the tale only clicks into credibility when Everett goes into outsider mode. A wonderfully flamboyant exposure of the making of a traitor, this deserved more acclaim and box-office receipts than it got.
