The UK release of Ben Affleck's feature debut as a director was delayed because of similarities with the Madeleine McCann case. Adapted from the novel by Mystic River author Dennis Lehane, it's the absorbing story of a four-year-old girl who goes missing - seemingly without a trace - from a working-class area of south Boston. Amy Ryan is brilliant as the child's mother, who is both hideous and heartbreaking. Casey Affleck brings quiet intensity to the role of private investigator Patrick Kenzie, who obsessively follows the girl's trail at the expense of his relationship with fellow gumshoe Angie Gennaro (Michelle Monaghan). Fans of Lehane's series of books about Kenzie and Gennaro may be disappointed to see the character of Angie sidelined in places, although Monaghan does bring the necessary mix of self-assurance and vulnerability to the role. The director gets the best out of his cast (including Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman as cops working the same case), and his sensitive handling of difficult subject matter ensures that this story leaves a lasting impression.
