In adapting a story by Cornell Woolrich and hiring Bernard Herrmann for the score, François Truffaut here paid his most conscious tribute to Alfred Hitchcock. Yet this tale of relentless revenge also owes much to the style of Truffaut's other mentor, Jean Renoir. Jeanne Moreau gives a chameleon-like performance as the widow seeking retribution from the quintet who accidentally killed her husband on their wedding day. Each of them is an archetype of male boorishness, yet their deaths invoke a mixture of emotions and calculated flashbacks, revealing the extent of Moreau's loss and tempering the callousness of her crimes.
