Opening with an unnerving - then downright nasty - scene set around a dinner table that takes place in Swedish, The Beta Test challenges its audience from the start. However, if you make it past this opener, you're soon dropped into a slick mash-up of movie-industry satire The Player and the twitchy, machismo-filled paranoia of American Psycho. Co-writer/co-director Jim Cummings (Thunder Road) stars as Jordan Hines, an ambitious Hollywood agent about to marry Caroline (Virginia Newcomb). From the outside, Jordan's life appears perfect, but he's not a good guy, as evidenced when he accepts an invitation for an anonymous sexual encounter in a hotel room. Having cheated on his fiancée, Jordan quickly unravels in a whirl of obsessive behaviour, babbling monologues and possible hallucinations. Set firmly in the "Me Too" era, with all of its attendant toxic masculinity, The Beta Test can be a disorientating and even unpleasant watch, with a plot that careens as wildly as its lead character... but it's often impossible to look away.
