This race-against-time thriller is given an added sense of danger by its underwater setting, following a dive that goes badly wrong for two sisters. Director Maximilian Erlenwein economically sets the scene as Drew (Sophie Lowe) and May (Louisa Krause) arrive at a remote beauty spot for an annual get-together. While Drew is excited, May is more reserved, although she's diligent about the safety of their equipment. Once they dive in, Erlenwein wastes no time plunging the women into peril as a rock fall leads May to become trapped. With her sister's oxygen running out, Drew has to overcome panic to head to the surface to find help before it's too late. May, too, must remain calm, even as memories from her childhood begin to bubble up. Shot underwater rather than using CGI, the film benefits hugely from its realism: there are no monsters except the women's own thoughts, and the tension rests on their resilience and resourcefulness in the face of the mounting pressure. Immersive and nerve-shredding.
