Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Charles Addams's creepy crew lose their defining "kooky" factor in this cookie-cutter sequel to 2019's animated reboot. This time, filial tensions prompt Gomez (Oscar Isaac) and Morticia (Charlize Theron) to take their frightful family on a road trip. Son Pugsley (Javon Walton) finds the prospect humiliating, while daughter Wednesday (Chloë Grace Moretz) becomes convinced she was adopted - a fact seemingly confirmed by wicked scientist Cyrus Strange (Bill Hader), who claims that he is her biological father. Garish images and manic montages dominate as the Addamses visit the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls, their adventures set to pop songs with scant distinction or wit. While Moretz performs with deadpan relish, the creaking script gives her little funny to say, and satirical jabs at mainstream America proffer little more than jokes about tourists taking selfies. The result is a film that lacks the addictive, murky spirit of earlier interpretations.
