Summary
Historical crime drama starring Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon. In early 1960s Boston, Massachusetts, newspaper reporters Loretta McLaughlin and Jean Cole investigate a string of connected murder cases. Over the next few years, the pair endure sexism, institutional failings and plenty of false leads as they work to crack the mystery of the elusive serial killer.

The chilling true story of the Boston Strangler murders was previously the basis for a 1968 Richard Fleischer film, which focused on the case from the point of view of the investigating officers. Here, writer/director Matt Ruskin reframes it through the eyes of Record American journalists Loretta McLaughlin (Keira Knightley) and Jean Cole (Carrie Coon), who first broke the story in the early 60s. The film follows the pair as they work tirelessly to reveal the identity of the killer, while simultaneously battling police corruption and the misogynistic culture of their workplace. Ruskin establishes a tone that owes much to the work of David Fincher, with Zodiac in particular a clear reference point. There is also great attention to detail in the authentic-feeling re-creation of the time period, and the result is a compelling and atmospheric film that avoids veering into exploitative territory.
