Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A family tie that becomes an inescapable burden is the focus of this humane drama from first-time feature director Annabelle Attanasio. Camila Morrone is exceptional as the titular teen stuck in Anaconda, Montana, with her unpredictable ex-Marine dad (a believably tortured James Badge Dale), whose ghosts and addictions threaten to consume them both. Smothered by the cramped quarters of their trailer, Mickey spies an escape route in the form of a San Diego college application, while a flirtation with a sparky British newcomer (Calvin Demba) brings respite from her dirtbag boyfriend (Ben Rosenfield). The wider societal picture is subtly drawn in a film that's radiantly empathetic, and while things get exceedingly dark, the lush cinematography lifts our protagonist from the mire, capturing every detail of Morrone's beautifully nuanced performance.
