Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Fast-talking US comic Kevin Hart plays a streetwise hustler who can't admit to his upscale new girlfriend that he's actually a high-school dropout in this romp with a social conscience. So, it's back to that very same educational establishment to enrol in a night class, where a motley multi-ethnic selection of oddballs and late-bloomers is supervised by imposing tutor Carrie (Tiffany Haddish). That all sounds rather like a TV sitcom, and the episodic storyline plays a lot like one, too, which means the movie never really builds as it should. As ever, Hart fizzes with energy, while Haddish essentially steals the show, combining comic punch with a semblance of genuine characterisation. However, the six credited screenwriters rarely manage to get the anticipated sparks flying between them, and director Malcolm D Lee seems to be playing safer than his previous outrageous offering Girls Trip (which launched Haddish in the first place). There are plenty of self-improvement messages and it's watchably good-natured, but without ever going to the head of the class.
