Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

It's not often that a film's release is bookended by documentaries about its making, but Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe needed Lost in La Mancha (2002) and He Dreams of Giants (2019) to chronicle Terry Gilliam's 30-year battle to realise this pet project. Was Gilliam's film worth the trouble? Just about, although it's difficult to banish the "what might have beens" while watching this adventure. Returning to the scene of a student variation on Don Quixote, Adam Driver's cynical commercials director is lured into the delusional fantasy in which Jonathan Pryce's cobbler has dwelled since taking the title role. What ensues amuses without quite engrossing, as Gilliam's satirical swipes at millennial madness are as random as his plotting and characterisation. But the production design and cinematography are exceptional and this stands as a fitting summation of a maverick's relentless pursuit of his distinctive vision.
