Crime drama starring George Raft and Lynn Bari. A composer's death is dismissed as suicide, but the circumstances puzzle police lieutenant Joe Warne. Treating the case as murder, the detective uncovers several glamorous suspects. But his grim determination places his job, and even his life, on the line.
When a wealthy, cold-blooded composer is shot, the verdict is suicide. However, detective George Raft sets out to investigate further and comes to suspect glamorous starlet Lynn Bari of killing him. This glossy film noir, slickly directed by Edwin L Marin, offers an appealing performance from Raft in cultivated good-guy mode; it also features a catch of well-played red herrings, led by Virginia Huston, Joseph Pevney (who later turned to direction) and Diana Dors-lookalike Myrna Dell. As for the nocturne of the title, composed by Leigh Harline, it's rather good and features heavily in the plot.
