Directed on location by Lewis Gilbert, the script was extensively rewritten and then ad-libbed by Welles, who clashed loudly with co-star Jurgens. For Welles, this "holiday" he boycotted the premiere and never saw the finished film was his first visit to Macao where he hatched the idea of filming Isak Dinesen's The Immortal Story. Welles hit the markets for Chinese bric-a-brac and even hijacked Gilbert's camera equipment to shoot some background footage, which eventually found its way into his 1968 film.
