Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This fresh take on mockumentaries follows the build-up to an over-the-top wedding, all filmed by best man Raif (comedian Rufus Hound). The film isn't entirely original, however, given that a familiar love-triangle plot links the usual spoofs on the military-style planning that the big day seems to require. Bride-to-be Saskia (Lucy Punch) is an old school crush of Raif's, while the groom, Tim (Robert Webb), is his brother. Webb gives a sly, amusing performance here, frowning with suspicion when Raif encourages Saskia to rediscover her inner wild child and eliciting the audience's sympathy whenever his brother can't resist a spot of comedy grandstanding. However, the real stars of the show are Punch - an underrated comedy talent - and Harriet Walter, as her excitable mother. Director Nigel Cole (Calendar Girls) has a good feel for female angst and, except for a very silly ending, his film goes down as easily as a glass of bubbly.
