Our Score
A tricky one this. Continental commercial pulp is never going to attract the art house crowd, so there's little point in presenting such humdrum thrillers with subtitles. Yet, dubbing of this quality robs a movie of much-needed authenticity and renders it almost unwatchable for the casual viewer. Here, for example, director Peter F Bringmann makes atmospheric use of his Maltese locations and concocts a decent drama around drifter Marius Müller-Westernhagen's bid to keep out of the clutches of cops who are convinced he's a killer and rival drug gangs who are concerned he's a threat. But any tension is frittered away by those dispassionate voiceovers.

Adapted from Raymond Briggs' best-selling book and nominated for an Oscar in 1982, it is the story of a boy whose snowman comes to life at midnight, and the two embark on a series of magical adventures.
