Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Lucy Punch and Faye Marsay play a gay couple and David Tennant their unreconstructed neighbour in this sometimes cute, sometimes crass comic trifle about pregnancy. Legal counsel Olivia (Punch) and aspiring artist Alex (Marsay) have been together for almost a year. Olivia is getting broody; she's pushing 40, and is desperate for a baby "before the shop shuts". The younger Alex isn't so keen, and when she discovers that Olivia has started an insemination programme without telling her, she has drunken sex with neighbour John (Tennant). And yes, you've guessed it, both women then find themselves pregnant. A tragic late twist sits uneasily with the general comic tone of the film, but ironically provides the story with some genuinely powerful moments. Although it doesn't make for life-changing viewing, You Me and Him is an occasionally amusing confection that's given plenty of welly by its leads, albeit sometimes too much so in Punch's case.
