Our Score
Sci-fi fantasies of the Body Snatchers ilk provide the inspiration for director Edgar Wright's latest spoof, after mining zombie horrors in Shaun of the Dead and action thrillers in Hot Fuzz. This time the easy-going comic partnership of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost anchors a very British alien takeover in suburban Newton Haven, as the pair are joined by three other old friends (Eddie Marsan, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman) to complete a pub crawl started during their school days. But those pesky, blue-blooded robot replicas wanting to bring Earth into intergalactic line just keep getting in the way! Once more, Wright cleverly remoulds a beloved genre through his own fanboy cinephilia, producing many laugh-out-loud moments and only a few juvenile clunkers. The barmaggedon scenario eventually treads familiar ground and overdoes the action spectacle, but there's an engaging chemistry between the five boozers, while the surprise cameos, early 1990s indie soundtrack, zany violence and visual effects add to a self-aware, matey romp that slips down a treat.

Summary

A 40-year-old man who refuses to grow up drags four reluctant childhood friends back to their home town to recreate a pub crawl they attempted in their teens. As they work their way round the 12 local bars, they stumble on a threat to the entire human race. Sci-fi comedy, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman.
