Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Oscar winners Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange are the class double act in this otherwise underpowered coming-of-old-age comedy from Hitch director Andy Tennant. MacLaine's just-widowed Eva finds herself facing a future in a care home (slogan: "out of sight, out of mind") when an insurance cheque mistakenly made out for $5 million instead of $50,000 sends her and boozy best friend Maddie (a vivacious Lange) on a spending spree in Gran Canaria, with Eva's daughter (Demi Moore) and a dogged insurance agent (Howard Hesseman) hot on their trail. Very much in the varicose vein of the Exotic Marigold Hotel films and the Joan Collins road movie The Time of Their Lives, it starts off with some wistfully amusing observations on ageing, widowhood and loneliness but then veers into farcical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels territory. It's a pity because the leading ladies could have done wonders with a better script.
