The Body

Our Score
The influence of Alfred Hitchcock and Henri-Georges Clouzot is evident in the directorial debut of Oriol Paulo, who demonstrated his generic credentials with the script for Julia's Eyes (2010). Short-fused cop Jaime Peña (José Coronado) is called in to investigate the disappearance of the corpse of an heiress and businesswoman (Belén Rueda) after a morgue security guard (Manel Dueso) is killed by a passing car. The victim's husband (Hugo Silva) is the prime suspect because he's having an affair, however, the deeper Coronado delves, the less sense everything makes. Paulo overdoes the jittery camerawork during interrogation scenes, but ratchets up the suspense as he switches between flashbacks and the morgue. The characterisation is slight and an already contrived scenario risks becoming entirely incredible with a hint of the supernatural. But, the use of shadow and icily claustrophobic interiors ensure this remains slick, tense and atmospheric.

Premiere. A police inspector is called in to investigate the unexplained disappearance of a body from a morgue, with the only witness to the crime a security guard who is now in a coma. The detective becomes convinced that the dead woman's husband has something to hide, and while he protests his innocence, his personal demons soon overwhelm him. Thriller, starring Jose Coronado and Hugo Silva. In Spanish.
