Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Fourteen years after My Big Fat Greek Wedding became the highest-grossing romantic comedy ever, writer/star Nia Vardalos revisits the lives of Toula Portokalos and her family. The jokes may feel familiar, but the story has plenty of heart, as Toula strives to put the spark back into her marriage with Ian (John Corbett) and keep their teenage daughter (Elena Kampouris) from leaving Chicago for NYU. The celebratory title promises another excuse to smash plates (although, that's the one stereotype Vardalos doesn't tick off) and delivers one as Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan (returning as Toula's parents) retie the knot after discovering they're technically not married. There are moments of extreme silliness, but Vardalos's script occasionally makes pointed observations about the suffocating dynamics of a close-knit family, and she creates an infectious party atmosphere that helps you forgive the flaws.
