Mileage may vary enormously with French actor-turned-director Maïwenn's romantic yarn (her last was the impressive cop-centric ensemble story Polisse). It's one of those works that will only appeal to those with a high tolerance for French drama about relationships where the central couple fight, fret and fornicate a lot. While the plot is all too familiar, for a change it's told from the perspective of a woman - Tony (Emmanuelle Bercot) reflecting on her passionate and poisonous relationship with the charming but deeply troubled Georgio (Vincent Cassel) while she recovers from a skiing accident. Maïwenn clearly understands who these people are, what kind of clothes they wear, what food they eat, and so on which sometimes makes this feel a bit too much like lifestyle porn for Francophiles. The basic storyline is predictable, too, but the performances, especially from Bercot, are completely committed and involving.
