Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Strip away the tense soundtrack and there's little to get excited about in this mediocre crime thriller, in which Natasha Henstridge's special agent teams up with a retired FBI handwriting analyst (Tom Everett Scott) to stop a killer following a machine gun attack in a Washington DC train station. Adapted from the novel by The Bone Collector author Jeffery Deaver, it's a predictable tale that's littered with plot holes and continually reflects its TV movie-status despite earnest performances from its likeable leads. Though some of the investigative details are interesting (the title, for example, refers to the way the perp dots his i's), there's more focus on Scott's domestic dramas and the immediate, and frankly unrealistic, romantic sparks between him and Henstridge. Consequently, the film feels uneventful and contrived, with everything, including the climax, too neatly resolved.
