Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Juliette Binoche takes centre stage as a French movie star who is on her way to Switzerland for a tribute to the elderly theatre director who discovered her, when she receives news of the great man's death. She is accompanied by her long-suffering American personal assistant (Kristen Stewart) and they decide to stay on in the Alps so that Binoche can prepare for her role in a revival of the play in which she made her name. Then, she played the younger, scheming femme fatale; this time around she'll play the older woman, opposite a currently notorious Hollywood actress (Chloë Grace Moretz) whose love life is a subject of tabloid fascination. Director Olivier Assayas's comedy drama becomes a prism to refract the disconnects between Europe and America, highbrow and low culture, generational conflicts, and artifice and authenticity. It's a wise, playful work, that pivots on a clutch of knockout naturalistic performances from the leads, especially the slyly cast, increasingly impressive Stewart who in real life has been the subject of tabloid obsession and hysteria.
