Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Stuart Murdoch, the frontman of Scottish indie pop band Belle and Sebastian, turns writer/director for this frivolous musical offering set in Glasgow. Drawing upon songs Murdoch composed for a 2009 side project, the story follows Emily Browning's troubled 20-something heroine as she tries to move on with her life while under hospital supervision for depression. Discovering an outlet for her anxieties in writing songs, she finds willing accomplices in sensitive budding musician Olly Alexander and his enthusiastic protégé Hannah Murray, and the trio sets about forming a band. Browning is likeably vulnerable in the lead, her retro look channelling Anna Karina in her French New Wave prime. However, Murdoch's screenplay lacks the wit and polish of his songs, and his direction only comes alive during a few giddy dance numbers. A spirit of youthful naivety does permeate the tale, but while it's sure to charm some, others may find it all insufferably twee.
