Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Daniel Radcliffe's come a long way from Harry Potter's wide-eyed boy wizard, as this ingenious, grimly funny but nevertheless dark and often bloody horror fantasy proves. Radcliffe stars as Ig Perrish, a small-town DJ who, as the story begins, is accused of killing his longtime sweetheart Merrin (Juno Temple). Unable to remember what happened that night, Ig curses God, only to find that his blasphemy results in him sprouting a set of devil horns that would seem to confirm his guilt. The mystery as to whether he committed the crime is compellingly handled, but it's really a sideshow to the film's main pleasure: whoever sees Ig's horns - and not everyone can - feels obliged to reveal their true feelings, no matter how awkward. The black comedy is delicious, though the more violent set pieces are not for the faint of heart.
