An anonymous body in the Arizona desert sparks the beginning of a real-life human drama. The search for identity leads us back across a continent to seek out the people left behind and the meaning of a mysterious tattoo.
After a body is discovered in the Arizona desert, a forensics team immediately goes to work to find out who the dead man was and how he got there. But this isn't a traditional whodunnit. It is a socially conscious documentary asking profound questions, with footage of the scene bringing home the plight of migrants trying to cross into the United States. Director Marc Silver follows Gael García Bernal in re-creating the journey of the man with the name "Dayani Cristal" tattooed on his chest, elevating him from victim to hero en route. It's a story with a number of twists, which leads to a powerful conclusion, but the fact that is so commonplace makes it all the more shocking. There are discussions, too, about the controversial border wall forcing migrants to take ever riskier routes to get around it. But Silver doesn't delve too deeply into the politics, and instead takes a humanitarian approach, underlining the point that, whatever walls we build, we still have a responsibility to one other.
