Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

No two ways about it, Chloë Grace Moretz, the young star of Let Me In, Kick-Ass and Carrie, is one of cinema's brightest up-and-coming actresses. But this crass and corny "afterlife" romance isn't the best showcase for her talents, though it may strike a chord with "tweenage" girls. Moretz plays Mia, a teen cello prodigy torn between going away on a music scholarship and staying home with her boyfriend, the first great love of her life. Then a car accident kills her mum, dad and younger brother, and leaves Mia comatose, but able to have out-of-body experiences. The film then cuts clumsily between lengthy flashbacks of Mia's life and love before the accident, and shorter scenes of her wandering around the intensive-care unit where her body lies, able to see and hear everything, but unable to be seen or heard by anyone. Her boyfriend mopes around the ICU too. So, does it all end happily? No prizes for guessing.
