Sometimes the main cast of Silent Witness feel like spectators in their own drama, as if they’ve wandered onto the wrong set and want to join in.
Tonight’s episode starts out as a standard, gruesome procedural — a woman is stabbed to death and her husband is the obvious suspect — then it veers off to become more interested in other things, including the attractive female detective investigating the case who, like last week’s attractive female detective, has a blot on her record that she’s trying
to expunge.
Then at the end the whole story swerves off in a new direction and leaves the main cast behind entirely. It’s really odd plotting, but oddly gripping, too, and as the compromised detective, Christine Bottomley is excellent.
About this programme
5/10. Part one of two. A pub landlady is stabbed to death and has the tip of her little finger cut off, and while Leo and Jack collect mounting evidence that her husband was responsible, Nikki remains convinced of the man's innocence. When he is charged with the crime, she must convince her colleagues the woman was the latest victim of a psychopathic serial killer, resulting in a deadly game of cat and mouse as they seek out the culprit. Christine Bottomley, Penny Downie and Christopher Fulford guest star.
