Ripper Street

Series 1 - 3. The King Came Calling

Radio Times
Review by:
Alison Graham

In an episode so rank with effluvia you may need a cushion to hide behind, the population of London’s East End is dropping to its knees, vomiting (and the rest) copiously.

You may wonder what this public health matter has to do with dour Detective Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen). But a heinous criminal act lies behind what at first looks to be the return of cholera.

Soon the streets of Whitechapel and beyond are crawling with the sick
and the dying and Reid, along with his wiry sidekick sergeant (Jerome Flynn) and City police counterpart (Patrick Baladi), are on the trail of a madman.

For Reid the hunt soon develops an unpleasant personal dimension thanks to his do-gooding, pious wife Emily.

About this programme

3/8. H Division and the City of London work together when a sudden cholera outbreak causes them to suspect deliberate contamination in both boroughs. Inspector Sidney Ressler (The Office's Patrick Baladi) is the officer charged with joining Reid's team as they scour Whitechapel for clues and connections, but as the laboratory fills with bodies, no evidence is to be found. Meanwhile, Emily seeks a patron for her charity efforts, only to face resistance wherever she turns. Crime drama, also starring Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn, Adam Rothenberg and Amanda Hale.
