It could, in the wrong hands, be sludgy and dull, but Big Fat Quiz of the Year has been going since 2004 with Jimmy Carr at the helm. It’s as slick as a comedy panel show based on a pub quiz and shown in the middle of sherry season could hope to be.
This year’s contenders, including Jonathan Ross, Russell Howard, Jack Whitehall and James Corden, are good value, and there’s no shortage of material from a year that has featured the Olympics, the Diamond Jubilee, Prince Harry’s visit to Vegas and Gangnam Style.
But the big question is whether any of the celebrity guests (who include Jack Black and Ricky Gervais) will ask our host: what rhymes with Timmy Bar fax sandal?
About this programme
Jimmy Carr tests celebrity panellists including Jonathan Ross, Russell Howard, Jack Whitehall and James Corden on their knowledge of events from the past 12 months - helped by an A-list line-up of question setters. The contestants are quizzed about headline-making events such as Prince Harry's activities in Las Vegas and Usain Bolt's celebration of his 200m win at the Olympic Games - as well as why pasties became a source of controversy for the Government.
