Las Vegas, the 1960s. Mobster Vincent Savino (The Shield’s Michael Chiklis) arrives to see off the threat of casino regulation using violence and corruption. The town sheriff is AWOL; when a young woman is murdered, rancher Ralph Lamb (Dennis Quaid) is called on. He has military police experience, so he becomes “the law in this town”. He and Savino are on a collision course.

Vegas, then, is in fact just another police procedural with a period setting and some Scorsese-ish trappings. But with this cast – Carrie-Anne Moss is here too, as the incorruptible assistant DA – it’s a solid, classy start.

About this programme

1/21. When a dead body turns up on the interstate highway and the incumbent sheriff is nowhere to be found, Las Vegas mayor Ted Bennett calls on his rancher friend Ralph Lamb for help. Reluctantly, the ex-cop strikes a deal and accepts the position, enlisting brother Jack and son Dixon as back-up. His direct approach achieves results, but rankles with everyone from the district attorney to the heavies at Chicago gangster Vincent Savino's new casino. Crime drama set in the 1960s, starring Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis and Carrie-Anne Moss.
