“He never spoke about it” is the refrain of this series. It follows celebrities uncovering the war records of their parents and grandparents and being shocked by how much they kept heroically to themselves.

The techniques are lifted from Who Do You Think You Are? – surprises are forever lurking in buff envelopes, ready to pounce on the celebrities and move them to tears. Chris Tarrant’s father won the Military Cross – that much he already knew, but he never knew what for. Finding out involves learning about a remarkable covert operation after D-Day.

Meanwhile, Lisa Faulkner learns how her grandfather was one of the unsung heroes of the Battle of Britain.
