This is one of those series that sounds worrying: is it going to be a point-and-laugh freak show or a sensitive approach to a tricky subject? The idea is that seven transsexual men and women gather in a country house to share their experiences.
They’re at various stages of changing their bodies and their lives: Drew has lived for five years as a woman, while Sarah is just starting out: “There’s no future for me as a guy,” she says. “I hate myself.” Fox, in the early stages of female-to-male transformation explains, “I’ve got to go through this to get to a place where my outside reflects my inside.” It’s sensitively made but there are still eye-opening moments as we learn the, ahem, ins and outs of surgery and coming out to your family.
About this programme
Seven transgender men and women convene at a summer retreat, where they share a mutual understanding of what it is like to be a transsexual in Britain today. In various stages of gender reassignment, the group members include 22-year-old Lewis, who was born female and, at the age of six, told his mother that he felt like a boy trapped in a girl's body. He and his fellow transsexuals share experiences and provide an insight into the problems and prejudices they face in everyday life.
