This study of the golden postwar years of grammar schools turns into an overview of British education as the social upheavals of the 1960s throw into sharp relief the dilemma of a two-tier state school system. Is it better to have equal opportunities for all, or should a few lucky working-class kids be given the chance to improve their lot? It’s a debate that still rages.
Interviewees from Neil Kinnock to Paul Boateng and Edwina Currie talk eloquently of how their working-class parents’ hopes for their children hung on the results of their 11-plus exams, and there’s much tearful recollection of inspirational teachers and parents. This documentary has a real heart.
