As we rejoin the government-funded bug-zappers for series five, something underground is causing chaos in the city, and it’s not the Central Line. There are no reckless deviations from the show’s winning formula. It’s the customary blend of knotty conspiracy, romantic entanglement and rampaging beastie. But there’s more confidence in the plotting, so tonight we learn more about ex-soldier Matt’s identity and shifty Philip’s New Dawn project than we did in the entire last series. Connor and Abby (real-life couple Andrew-Lee Potts and Hannah Spearitt, second and third from right in picture) still get all the cute moments, and as sardonic pinstripe James Lester, Ben Miller nails all the comic possibilities with delicious aplomb.
About this programme
