It’s been 11 long months since we were all remedying our Christmas blues with a spot of War and Peace. And what a TV year 2016 has been – we’ve had The Night Manager, Happy Valley, Game of Thrones, Line of Duty, Planet Earth II, Victoria, National Treasure and much, MUCH more.

It’s also been the year that on-demand truly took off and cemented itself alongside scheduled TV with the release of Stranger Things, Fleabag, Thirteen, The Crown, The Gilmore Girls and – of course – The Grand Tour.

So as 2016 draws to a close, we want to know what you – yes, YOU! – think of this year’s treasure trove of telly. We’ve launched the inaugural RadioTimes.com Reader Awards to celebrate the best programmes airing on British television since 1st January 2016.

The nominees in this final category are actors, presenters and TV personalities who have captured the public’s imagination over the last 12 months, whether that be thrilling viewers in the year’s biggest dramas, entertaining us with baking innuendos, enthralling us with the wonders of nature or dancing a jaw-dropping routine to Gangnam Style on live television.

At some point in the last year, all eight have become major talking points for their work – here’s why…

Aidan Turner: The star of one of TV’s biggest dramas, Aidan sparked national debate as his character Ross Poldark convincingly grappled with the implications of his adulterous antics.

Danny Dyer: The King of the Queen Vic has kept the residents of Albert Square in check over the last year and crowned it all with one of the most entertaining Who Do You Think You Are? episodes of all time as he uncovered his connection to real-life royalty.

David Attenborough: The titan of natural history broadcasting was back with a bang this autumn with a beguiling six-part series of Planet Earth II that has left TV audiences gasping, cheering and heaping on the praise.

Ed Balls: How does one describe what the former Shadow Chancellor did to the nation with his take on Psy’s Gangnam Style? Week after week, Balls left Strictly viewers in stitches, causing genuine upset when he was eventually voted off.

Keeley Hawes: Line of Duty viewers were rendered speechless at the start of the year by the return – and gruesome demise – of Keeley’s fan favourite DI Lindsay Denton. Her primetime reign continued with hit ITV series The Durrells followed by a lead turn in national TV obsession The Missing.

Kit Harington: Is Jon Snow really dead? That was the question plaguing viewers earlier this year before Kit’s not entirely unexpected Game of Thrones comeback. His character continued to get viewers talking, from bloodthirsty epic Battle of the Bastards to the long-awaited confirmation of Thrones fans’ favourite theory.

Mel & Sue: There was a nationwide outcry as Bake Off’s much-loved presenters announced they were quitting the show when it moved from BBC to Channel 4. Since then each of their trademark baking puns has been tinged with sadness as viewers contemplate the bleak future of GBBO without them.

Scarlett Moffatt: One of Gogglebox’s breakout stars, Scarlett was an early favourite from the moment she walked into the I’m a Celebrity camp – and she delivered on her promise, cementing her place in our affections with a steady stream of wise one-liners before landing herself the jungle title.
